This Week

So, we have been back for two whole days now (from our 6 snow-day extravaganza... we are now up to 12) and can I just say that I am tired?  We have PLC's every week, which I am certain that many of you all do, maybe even more than that.

Today, we read an article about poverty.  Our school currently has a 67% free/reduced lunch population and that I'm sure is higher because many of the students that need to be receiving free lunches aren't registered for it...  How do you all take the Common Core standards (which, in my opinion are at exemplary levels) and the vocabulary that comes along with it and ensure your students that may be from a lower socioeconomic family are achieving mastery?

Just curious.

Happy blogging,

Emily

  1. I know exactly what you are saying - my school is at 62%. My class (control group) is very needy, only because some of them have some truly awful home lives. My recent struggle is that I don't know how I can worry about if they are mastering all the content that is being taught or just teaching them skills to survive what they are dealing with at home. While it seems crazy and something we all learned, I find topics that students like to teach. I did a whole Super Bowl two day lesson that brought in inferencing skills and then tied into the math concepts I'm teaching. That helping some, especially the boys that aren't always interested. This is something I seem to struggle with daily, I want to help them learn but there are huge hurtles that many kids face that they shouldn't!

    1. Terry,
I feel terrible that I never even think about things like that...I was so concerned that we had so many snowdays that I didn't even think about incorporating something like the Super Bowl into my lessons.

We have hall duty every morning..well it's more of me greeting my kids, but this first grader was SO concerned about his mom having a flat tire and that she wouldn't make it home. I mean, really? A first grader should not be concerned with things like that- those are adult troubles. It is just very eye opening and scary in some ways.
